Once again, the Petite Heure Minute lends the canvas of its off-centered time to the Ateliers d’Art. On its dial comes plique-à-jour enamel work representing two variations of hummingbird, each limited to a mere eight pieces.
It was only a year ago, in 2018, that the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art were demonstrating a new display of creativity. By bringing the ancient technique of plique-à-jour enamel into the present, they breathed life into watchmaking creations evoking the era of cathedrals, when the foundations of plique-à-jour enamel – some 1500 years ago – were formed.
These foundations involve creating an enamel composition made, not from a single piece, but from multiple joined pieces, separated by a thread of gold. The technique, reminiscent of stained glass, requires a rare dexterity when firing the enamels, as each passage in the oven risks altering the the color as well the integrity of the enameled sections. Ultimately, plique-à-jour enamel (or smalta clara in Latin) allows for the creation of partitioned decorations in infinite color variations, which are literally bathed in light. Applied to watchmaking, this demanding technique gives Jaquet Droz the freedom to design timepieces entirely void of case backs, illuminating the movement in soft, radiant light.
The Petite Heure Minute “Smalta Clara Hummingbird” uses the smallest Jaquet Droz movement, a descendant of the Charming Bird. The size of this caliber, reduced to the extreme, frees up the maximum amount of space on the dial, perfect for carrying out the plique-à-jour enamel work on as large a surface as possible.
With its striking plumage, the hummingbird – found in the prestigious Tropical Bird Repeater as well – takes center stage and offers up an extraordinary spectacle of color that changes with orientation and the light. Two colorful birds were created by the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art to bring the composition to life. In the first, pink and light blue tones echo a mother-of-pearl dial within a red gold case set with 100 diamonds (0.89 carat). In the second, the hummingbird is adorned with green and turquoise feathers over a shaded blue background. The mother-of-pearl dial, displaying two hands in blue steel, is housed within a white gold case that is also set with 100 diamonds. Each model is equipped with an oscillating weight in either gold or platinum engraved by hand featuring the hummingbird. The two models, strictly limited to eight pieces each, come on satin straps that match the dominant tones of each creation. Bathed in light, they radiate a soft, muted glow that illustrates the rarity and exclusivity of Jaquet Droz creations.
“Some watches tell time, some tell a story”
A warmed up stage, a drum kit, a few guitars and a harmonica: “It’s only rock’n’roll!” Today, Jaquet Droz unveils the first out of the 23 unique timepieces to retrace the world of the Rolling Stones through motion. Beside the arm of a record player that hovers over a platinum album replica (the power reserve), a scene depicts their signature instruments in miniature paintings and gold thread. The external disc rotates up to 8 consecutive times for 30 seconds and is adorned with the albums that the collector will choose for his unique timepiece. At 9 o'clock, the iconic tongue beats rhythmically, from left to right and from top to bottom. “And I like it!”
After three years of work, Jaquet Droz and John Howe have developed an Art Watch dedicated to emotion, wonder and fantasy. Draped in gold and rare stones, their dragon has a record 9 distinct animations. Inside a 43 mm case, the piece is entirely handmade and can be customized almost without limit by the client. Thanks to a Studio in the heart of the Jaquet Droz head quarter, clients will be offered an immersive phygital experience that will allow them to witness the live creation of their timepieces. There is no series to be announced, only unique pieces.
The “Effinger” clock dated from 1783 and signed Jaquet-Droz, has been sold at CHF 256,000.-, which is more than three times the starting bid of CHF 70,000.-, during the Koller auction on March the 31st 2022.
